Ο επικεφαλής του Συμβουλίου πληροφοριών της Εσθονίας, Mikk Marran, δήλωσε ότι υπήρχε μια πιθανότητα, έστω και μικρή, για τη Ρωσία να δεχθεί επίθεση από το ΝΑΤΟ μέσα στο 2017.
Κατά την παρουσίαση της ετήσιας έκθεσης του τμήματος, ο υπάλληλος είπε ότι υπήρχε μια πιθανότητα για τη Ρωσία, για την επίθεση του ΝΑΤΟ το 2017, αν και οι πιθανότητες για μια τέτοια εξέλιξη ήταν λεπτή.
Λαμβάνοντας υπόψη το γεγονός ότι, η ρωσική κυβέρνηση είναι ένα αυταρχικό καθεστώς,δεν μπορεί να αποκλείσει εντελώς την απειλή της ρωσικής ηγεσίας να κάνει ένα στρατηγικό λάθος ,να προσπαθήσουμε για συλλογική άμυνα του ΝΑΤΟ, λέει η έκθεση από το τμήμα.
Κορυφαίοι ρώσοι αξιωματούχοι έχουν δηλώσει επανειλημμένα πριν, ότι η Ρωσία δεν θα επιτεθεί ποτέ σε οποιαδήποτε χώρα του ΝΑΤΟ. Σύμφωνα με τον Υπουργό Εξωτερικών, Σεργκέι Λαβρόφ, το ΝΑΤΟ γνωρίζει πολύ καλά το γεγονός ότι η Μόσχα δεν σχεδιάζει να επιτεθεί σε κανέναν. Την ίδια στιγμή,το ΝΑΤΟ δεν χάνει την ευκαιρία να αυξήσει την στρατιωτική παρουσία του κοντά στα ρωσικά σύνορα.
